Mesh Network Topology
Mesh topology is an advanced star network. In this, each workstation is connected to all the others. Mesh topology consists of network nodes that are all connected. In mesh topology, there are many point-to-point links. For message transmission, there is no concept of a central switch, hub or computer that acts as a central communication point as can be seen in the figure below.
Advantages of Mesh Topology
- Mesh networks provide the highest level of security and unmatched performance once implemented.
- Workspaces are independent of each other. Failure at any particular station does not prevent other stations from communicating with each other.
- A connection can carry its own data load.
- Diagnosing a fault is easy.
- Communication between nodes is very fast.
- Mesh topology is robust.
- The fault is easily diagnosed. The data is reliable as the data is transferred between devices through dedicated channels or links.
- Provides security and privacy.
Disadvantages of Mesh Topology
- The main drawback of this topology is that its implementation becomes more and more difficult depending on the number of stations to be installed.
- The resources required are enormous, whether in terms of connection equipment or cabling.
- As connectivity becomes more important, installation and configuration become more challenging.
- A fully connected mesh network increases the cost of cabling.
- It is necessary to ground the system.
- Installation and configuration are difficult.
- Cables cost more because a large amount of wiring is required, so it is suitable for a small number of devices.
- Maintenance cost is high.
